Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has said that the current government has given significant attention to the development of sports in Nepal. Speaking at an event organized at Baluwatar on Wednesday, PM Oli stated that Nepali athletes have now reached a level where they can pursue sports professionally and make a living out of it.
The event was organized by the Ministry of Youth and Sports to honor international medal-winning athletes, coaches, and officials. During the ceremony, PM Oli highlighted the transformation in the country's sports landscape compared to the past.
“In the past, it was not possible to become a fully dedicated professional athlete in Nepal. But now, we have created an environment where athletes can dedicate themselves to sports,” PM Oli said. “Athletes can now survive and sustain themselves through their sporting careers.”
He also mentioned that while many other countries have been developing sports in an organized way for decades, Nepal only recently began to take structured steps in the field.
“We only had one stadium—Dasharath Stadium—until recently. Now, sports infrastructure is expanding. Though cricket started relatively late, it has already begun to achieve impressive results on the international stage,” he added.
PM Oli also distributed cash prizes and honors to athletes, coaches, and sports officials who have earned medals at international competitions. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to further investment in the sports sector and emphasized plans to encourage more youth to engage in athletics.
