Birtamod United FC from Jhapa has secured a spot in the semifinals of the 2nd Taplejung Gold Cup after a commanding 3-0 victory over Army, a team widely regarded as a strong contender for the title.

In a match that saw Jhapa’s strategic play outshine their opponents, the goals came from Devendra Tamang, Abhishek Gurung, and Hisub Thapalia. Despite a scoreless first half, Jhapa came out with renewed vigor after the break. Abhishek Gurung opened the scoring just a minute into the second half, setting the tone for Jhapa’s dominant performance.

Jhapa capitalized on every opportunity, with Devendra Tamang’s spectacular free kick in the 65th minute doubling their lead to 2-0. Shortly thereafter, Hisub Thapalia added a third goal, skillfully bypassing Army’s goalkeeper Navin Periyar in a one-on-one situation to secure a decisive win.

Army, which fielded a lineup featuring seasoned players like Bharat Khawas, Navayug Shrestha, and Jitendra Karki, struggled to break through Jhapa’s defense. The army's inability to convert chances into goals was evident as the game progressed, much to the disappointment of their supporters.

Devendra Tamang was named the Man of the Match for his pivotal role in Jhapa’s triumph, earning a cash prize of Rs 5,000.

With this victory, Birtamod United FC moves forward to the semifinals. Tomorrow, the first semifinal will see Sangharsh Sporting Youth Club Taplejung face off against Sagarmatha Youth Club of Morang.

The tournament, organized by the Lakhe Jatra Organizing Committee in celebration of the Lakhe Jatra, will conclude with the final match on August 10, where the champion will be awarded a trophy and Rs 5 lakh, while the runner-up will receive Rs 250,555.
