News Half-time report: Nepal Have A Mountain To Climb For SAFF Final
Sandesh Sigdel

Nepal are facing Bangladesh in a game that will determine whether or not the country survives in this SAFF Championship. Nepal must earn at least one point to advance to the final.

Bangladesh requires all three points to advance to the final. Until now, the game has been end-to-end, and both teams are still in contention to win. The score remains 1-0 in favor of Bangladesh at the end of the first half.

Nawayug Shrestha sold a dummy to Topu Barman in the third minute of the game, who then pulled Nawayug back when he looked through on goal. He was only given a yellow card for the challenge. Nepal made it even more difficult for themselves by conceding through a set piece in the eighth minute of the game, in what was already a close game. Suman Reza headed a ball in from the left, and Dinesh Rajbanshi, who was marking him, didn't trouble him too much.

Nepal had a great chance in the 15th minute of the game where Rohit Chand couldn’t direct the ball towards the goal and kicked it over the bar. Gautam Shrestha left the defender on the ground when he dribbled past him to put a ball in that Rohit couldn’t convert. Dinesh Rajbanshi in the 22nd minute of the game gave the ball away to Suman Reza who was in acres of space on the right and hit a tame shot straight at Kiran Limbu.

Nepal have had a few moments in the game including an Aayush Ghalan header towards the end of the half that went wide. Nepal have had some moments and have put a few crosses here and there but have not had their stamp on the game. Bangladesh have been resolute at the back and they have shown that they can continue to do so as they did against India earlier in the tournament.

Almutairi’s team has to make a big turnaround in their gameplay to have any chance of making it to the final. Nepal have looked shaky at the back, haven’t got hold of the midfield, given away the ball cheaply at times, and haven’t given the Bangladeshi backline much to worry about baring a couple of moments.

Bangladesh would go through to the final if the situation stays the same in the end. So they would look to not concede first and probably will keep on playing on the counter.
