The semi-finals of the SAFF Women's Championship 2024 are underway today, promising an electrifying showdown as home team Nepal prepares to face five-time champions India in the second match of the day. Earlier, former champions Bangladesh will take on Bhutan in the first semi-final.

As anticipated, Nepal, India, and Bangladesh have made it to the semi-finals in all seven editions of the tournament. This marks the second time Bhutan has reached this stage, showcasing their improved performance during the group stages. Nepal topped Group B, remaining undefeated with two wins and one draw, while India secured their semi-final spot as runners-up in Group A.

Nepal’s journey to the semi-finals was highlighted by an impressive 11-0 victory over Maldives and a 6-0 win against Sri Lanka. The team's only hiccup came in a goalless draw against Bhutan. Rekha Paudel has emerged as a standout player for Nepal, leading the scoring charts with seven goals, five of which came in the match against Maldives.

India's path to the semi-finals has been more tumultuous. They began strongly with a 5-2 victory over Pakistan but suffered a 3-1 defeat to Bangladesh, resulting in one win and one loss in the group stage.

In their previous encounters, Nepal has historically faced challenges against India, winning only two of the 17 matches played, with India claiming 11 victories. However, Nepal holds a psychological edge going into this match, having defeated India in the semi-finals of the last SAFF Championship in 2022.

The current form of both teams favors Nepal, who have lost just one of their last five matches. Their defensive line, led by captain Angela Tumbapo Subba, has been formidable, as they have kept clean sheets throughout the group stage. Following an injury to defender Hira Kumari Bhujel, Nepal may adjust their formation, deploying a solid midfield featuring Renuka Nagarkoti, Saru Limbu, Sabita Rana Magar, and Preeti Rai. Up front, Rekha and Sabitra Bhandari will aim to capitalize on scoring opportunities alongside Rashmi Ghising and Amisa Karki.

With both teams looking to secure a place in the final, the match promises to be a fierce contest.

Fans eagerly await to see whether Nepal can maintain their unbeaten run or if India will rise to the occasion to extend their legacy in the tournament.
