The 13th edition of the Gurkhas Cup is set to take place this weekend in Dallas, Texas, with 39 teams competing for a total cash prize of $21,000.
Organized by the Dallas Gurkhas Foundation, the tournament has become a major event for the Nepali community across the U.S., attracting teams from New York, Seattle, Los Angeles, and more. This 7v7 football tournament has evolved into much more than just a sporting event. It has become a symbol of cultural pride, unity, and tradition for the Nepali diaspora. Initially known as the Dashain Cup, the tournament was renamed the Gurkhas Cup when the Dallas Gurkhas Football Club expanded into the Dallas Gurkha Foundation.
The event represents the intersection of tradition and athleticism, with the slogan “Tradition Meets Athleticism” capturing its spirit.
"The Gurkhas Cup is a cultural festival for our youth. It brings together communities, strengthens bonds, and preserves our tradition while promoting a healthy and active lifestyle,” said Binod Bista, coordinator of the organizing committee.
Seeing the veterans’ enthusiasm is truly inspiring. What began as a way to get our senior players back on the field has now turned into a fierce competition,” Bista added.
The youth category continues to be a major attraction, with young players showcasing their skills and passion for football. The tournament has become a key event for these athletes, who train year-round in anticipation of the competition. This year’s competition features 17 veteran teams and 3 U-9 youth teams, highlighting the tournament's dedication to promoting football across generations.
In addition to the exciting matches, part of the profits will go toward supporting youth sports initiatives in Nepal. The Dallas Gurkha Foundation has extended an open invitation to all football and sports enthusiasts in the Dallas area to come and witness the exciting action live. With teams from the East Coast to the West Coast, this year’s Gurkha Cup is set to deliver unforgettable moments on the field.
