Kathmandu (GoalNepal) - Lionel Messi, the Argentina sensation, has made history as he took home the FIFA World Cup 'Player Of The Tournament' (Golden Ball) award for the second time in his illustrious career. Messi was awarded after he led Argentina to their third World Cup title by defeating France in Qatar earlier today.

Messi had also taken home the Golden Ball in 2014, having lost to Germany in the final.

Messi racked up seven goals in the tournament this time, including two in the final in an enthralling match, although having to wait for a penalty shootout to win against France. Before this World Cup, Messi had only scored six World Cup goals meaning he more than doubled his tally from his previous four tournaments combined.

Other than goals, Messi also had three assists in the tournament and countless other moments that held the Argentine attack in place.

France's Kylian Mbappe won the Golden Boot with eight goals. He has scored 12 goals in two World Cup campaigns before turning 24.

Argentina's Enzo Fernandez won the Young Player Of The Tournament award. After a stellar campaign, Argentina's goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez won the Goalkeeper Of The Tournament (Golden Gloves) award. He was immense in Argentina's run to the final as he saved two penalties in the shootout against the Netherlands in the quarterfinals while also saving one in the shootout in the final.
