Kathmandu (GoalNepal) - Saudi Arabia have inflicted a shock defeat on world football heavyweights Argentina. Saudi Arabia defeated Argentina 2-1 at the Lusail Stadium in Doha to start their campaign with all three points.
In what was a day to forget for the South American champions, it was them who took the lead in the game. Lionel Messi converted a spot kick in the minute of the match to give Argentina the start they wanted. But Argentina were pretty wasteful after taking the lead. Lautaro Martinez put the ball in the back of the net in the 28th minute but was ruled off by VAR.
It was Saudi Arabia's turn to shock the world at the start of the second half. Saleh Al-Shehri equalized for the Asian team in the 49th minute after beating Cristian Romero's tackle and Emiliano Martinez's attempt to save the ball. Just four minutes later, Salem Al-Dawasari scored a brilliant hit to give his side the lead.
After conceding two, Argentina desperately tried to get back into the game but couldn't make it happen. The other two teams in the group; Mexico and Poland are set to face each other later in the day.
Denmark and Tunisia will face each other at 6:45 PM NST in the second match of the day.
