Former Nepal youth international & coach Gambhir Rai has passed away.

According to family sources, 56-year-old former footballer Gambhir Rai, a resident of Bhadrapur municipality 10 Chandragadhi Bazar, passed away on Sunday evening at B&C Hospital Birtamode during treatment. He was ill for a few days. He was taking medication for diabetes for a long time.

Gambhir started playing football at the age of 14. He was also a member of the U-16, U-19 and Nepal Youth Football Teams. He was associated with famous clubs like NRT, Janakpur Cigarette Factory and Manang Marsyangdi and scored three goals in international matches.

He retired from the football game in 2056, having held the position of vice president and member of the Jhapa District Football Association. He has played the role of coach of the local club Munal FC.

Bhadrapur Jhapa Gold Cup also honored him with the Lifetime Achievement Award on 17th Falgun 2079, noting that he has made a significant contribution to the strengthening and development of the football game.
