Kathmandu (GoalNepal) - Hosts Qatar are thrown close to group-stage elimination from the FIFA World Cup 2022 as they lost their second successive match, this time against African Champions Senegal.

In the match played at the Al Thumama Stadium on Friday, Senegal defeated Qatar 3-1 to open their account at the 22nd edition of the tournament.

Boulaye Dia opened the scoring just before half-time when he took advantage of Khoukhi's slip to roll his shot past Barsham into the back of the net. Just three minutes after the break, Famara Diedhiou doubled their lead with a glancing header from a corner.

Qatar grew into the game and got their first-ever World Cup goal when substitute Mohammed Muntari thumped in a header in the 78th, but Ahmadou Bamba Dieng wrapped it up late with a first-time strike.

Qatar will be eliminated from the group stage if the Netherlands avoid defeat against Ecuador later today. A defeat for the Dutch side will make sure Qatar bow out of the tournament despite one match remaining to be played.
