Kathmandu (GoalNepal) - Japan have made a stellar comeback to defeat heavyweights Germany in the FIFA World Cup 2022. Japan defeated Germany 2-1 to start their campaign with all three points.

Germany took the lead in the match in the 33rd minute. Japanese goalkeeper Shuichi Gonda brought down David Raum inside the box to award a spot-kick to Germany. Ilkay Gundogan stepped up to calmly dispatch the penalty to give the Germans the lead of the match.

Germany's Kai Havertz put the ball in the back of the net in the first-half stoppage time but his goal was ruled out by VAR for offside.

In the second half, it was Japan who came back to stun the Germans. Substitute Ritsu Doan scored the rebound in the 75th minute after another substitute Takumi Minamino's ball in was parried away by German goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.

Japan took the lead in the game eight minutes later. Takuma Asano, a substitute, received Itakura's long ball from a free kick in his own half, and with a flawless first touch, he beat Schlotterbeck. He sprinted into the box and fired from the tightest angle beating Neuer to score the winner.

This is the second World Cup in a row where they have lost the opening group match. In the 2018 edition, Germany lost to Sweden in their opening match and later crashed out of the group stages.

Spain and Costa Rica of the same group are set to take on each other later today.
