The Nepali community in New Zealand is overjoyed with the signing of Nepal national team captain Sabitra "Samba" Bhandari by A-League Women’s side Wellington Phoenix FC.
Sabitra, Nepal’s all-time leading goal scorer, was officially announced as a Phoenix player on Thursday, marking a proud moment for Nepali football fans across the globe—especially those living in New Zealand.
Dinesh Khadka, Honorary Consul of Nepal to New Zealand, shared his excitement, saying, “It is with immense pride and joy that we welcome Nepal’s women’s football captain, Sabitra ‘Samba’ Bhandari, to Aotearoa! Samba is Nepal’s all-time leading goal scorer and a true national icon. Her leadership, talent, and passion for the game have inspired millions—and now she brings that same energy to Wellington Phoenix FC, signed until the end of the 2026/27 season.”
To mark this special milestone, the Honorary Consulate Office is collaborating with the CEO of Wellington Phoenix to organize meet-and-greet events with Samba across major cities in New Zealand. These events will offer the Nepali diaspora a rare chance to meet their football hero in person and celebrate her journey together.
“Let us unite to welcome Samba to the Phoenix whānau and show her the strength and pride of the Nepali community in New Zealand,” added Khadka.
Samba’s arrival not only strengthens the Phoenix squad but also becomes a moment of cultural and emotional pride for the growing Nepali community in New Zealand.
